Salt Lake City, Ut (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

Salt Lake Community College has two intercollegiate sports teams that play in the spring?softball and baseball. Both teams are in the top-2 in the country.

?It is just so unusual to have two teams playing at the same time both ranked in the top-2 in the country,? said Salt Lake Community College Vice President of Institutional Advancement Tim Sheehan. ?Both teams have unbelievable records and the success they?ve had this year speaks to the quality of the programs and the College Athletic department?.

The Bruin softball team is the top-ranked squad in the nation?and has already qualified for the NJCAA national tournament?that will be held in St. George, UT on May 17th -19th?by winning the Region 18 title. The team’s record is now 55-7 overall this season.

The First-ranked Bruins had three players named to the Region 18 All-Tournament team: Tanisha Anderson, Maddy Woodard and Savanah Webster; MaCauley Flint was named the tournament?s Most Valuable Player.

The SLCC Baseball also won the Region 18 tournament and is looking to join the softball team at nationals. The team won a dramatic, 6-5 comeback victory against Western Nevada in the Region tournament final?SLCC was down three heading into the ninth inning before scoring four runs to win in its last at-bat. SLCC’s Dominique Taylor was named tournament MVP.

As a result of its region win, SLCC baseball has earned the opportunity to host a four team District Playoff May 17-19 at Cate Field. The winner of the playoff will head to National Junior College Athletic Association championship in Grand Junction, Colorado.

While the SLCC softball team has been ranked first in the country in several seasons, the baseball team earned its first-ever top ranking last year. Neither team has won the NJCAA Tournament, though, and both are looking to change that this year.

Currently ranked number 2 in the country?with a record of 43-8 on the season?SLCC?s next step toward qualifying for the national tournament comes in its first District playoff game against Lamar Community College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Cate Field. The other two teams in the double elimination district playoff?Central Arizona Community College and Western Nevada College?will face each other in a night game on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

All games will be available via live-streaming on SLCCTV and SLCC Radio. Both feeds are available at this link: http://rwdacad01.slcc.edu/video//slcctv/slcctv-live.html.
